1960 Roadster
Description
This numbers-matching 1960 356B 1600S Roadster, refinished in Condor Yellow with a black fabric top and tan leather interior, represents the first model year of the updated 356B T5. With a nod to safety concerns and visibility issues, the bumpers of the T5 were raised four inches front and rear, larger vertical bumper guards were added, and the headlights raised. Consequently, the fender line became nearly horizontal from the cowl to the chrome headlight rims. Horn grills were relocated above the front bumper, and brake cooling vents were molded into the bodywork below the bumper. This Roadster was restored in 2021. With new shocks, a recently refreshed transmission, and rebuilt engine with less than 1,500 miles, this Roadster is perfect for a top-down cruise along PCH, or a long distance road rally like the Rocky Mountain Miglia.
Its Condor Yellow color, available as a standard choice only in 1960 and 1961, is reportedly in excellent condition. Every panel on the car is original. All the brightwork has been renewed. Color-matched 15” wheels, bumpers with chrome and rubber Deco trim, chrome bumper guards, and brightly chromed hubcaps accentuate the soft pastel color. Dual exhaust pipes exit through the rear bumper guards providing better ground clearance.
The interior was changed from gray to tan leather to better complement its soft yellow exterior. Tan German Square Weave carpeting, tan Coco mats, and the original steering wheel redone in wood, with an added horn ring, contribute to Roadster’s striking allure.
The rebuilt 1.6L air-cooled, flat-four engine produces more than 75 HP at 5,000 RPM. Technicians incorporated a ‘Big-Bore’ kit to boost performance. Power is driven to the rear wheels through its smooth-shifting, Type 741, 4-speed transmission. In automotive reviews at the time, journalists reported acceleration from 0-60 MPH in less than 15 seconds, and top speeds approaching 110 MPH.
